Many of the best qualities in life are well hidden. We all seek. Many of us never find anything. Some of us find some things. Beauty in wood is often like that: deep inside, beneath the bark, checks and cracks. I am thrilled every time I look inside a piece of wood. | REVEALER, noun: one who: opens up to view; makes known I am a self taught wood turner. I live and work in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Placerville, California. I turn bowls, platters and vases, large and small, working extensively with salvaged wood of local trees: apple, pear, walnut, olive, and other fruit trees; oak and manzanita and exotic cultivars of nearby yards, orchards, and parks; and salvaged wood obtained from friends across the country. These woods are rescued from the fate of a fireplace or landfill to last forever as things of beauty and intrigue. Often my works are accented with laminated or inlaid exotic and domestic hardwoods, copper and other materials.
Whether art or craft, my object is to reveal, in a pleasing shape, the intricacies and interplay of color, figure, and luster that are hidden within the wood. I use two finishes: a light oil finish which is "food safe", for nuts and candies, (but moisture of any kind should be avoided); or, a salad bowl finish (an "S" on the bottom of the bowl indicates the salad bowl finish) which will tolerate some moisture.
My work is currently being shown at "Gallery El Dorado" in El Dorado, CA, "Gold Country Artists Gallery" in Placerville, CA and at "Hang It Up Gallery", Town Center, El Dorado Hills, CA. I am proud to be a Supporting Member of the American Association Of Wood Turners. Jack H. Nissen (916) 853 7310 or fax at (916) 853 7313 (Commissions gladly considered, my wood or yours.)
